Ongoing and Future Projects
Currently the Trinidad Conservation Project is funded primarily through Sustainable Harvest International (SHI), a U.S.-based non-profit who’s mission is very close to that of the TCP. We typically try to raise between $25,000 and $30,000 a year.
Stateside, we continue to raise monies in support of FUCOHSO and TCP and to build a growing network of friends and participants.
SHI has a five year plan for campesinos who participate in its program. When participants graduate after five years, they will be competent in managing their own financial affairs, know best sustainable management practices, be good stewards of their environment and communities:
- Present and future projects include:
- Tree planting and reforestation in a critical watershed.
- Conversion from traditional slash and burn methods to sustainable agricultural practices using organic fertilizer
- Planting new vegetable crops in family gardens that improve nutrition
- Creating farm to market crops so that campesino families will have an income stream for the first time ever
- Building community skills and organization.
- Creating sustainable rural banks
- Improving health and reducing wood consumption through the use of fuel efficient stoves
